My parents came to the United States from Chile as political refugees a couple of years before I was born, settling in Central California, where my dad was able to find work in the agriculture industry. I grew up in the Salinas Valley, where I first developed my love of reading and writing, and my commitment to social justice.
I obtained my B.A. in Spanish and Linguistics, as well as my Secondary English Credential from UCLA, where I am also currently working on my Master in Education. I consider myself a lifelong learner, and it is my greatest endeavor to nurture the love of learning in each one of my students as well.
This is my first year at Hawthorne High School, and I am proud to work in this amazing community. I am an enthusiastic supporter of public schools, and I wholeheartedly believe in every person's right to a well-rounded, quality education regardless of their sex, race, level of ability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.
I chose to teach as an expression of my love for humanity. Any one of my students can tell you that empathy is the cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. I am a strong believer in the concept that when there is love and trust in the classroom, optimal learning can take place. I strive for my classroom to be a safe and welcoming shared space where *all* our students can feel safe and nurtured at all times.
When I am not in the classroom, I can be found spending quality time with my amazing three-year-old daughter, Elani. I have many other interests, such as reading (especially ethnic literature), creative writing, creating art, political activism, spending time with friends, cooking, and going to the beach, but during this extremely busy period of my life, I do not have time for much more than parenting, teaching, and working on my masters inquiry.
